Noises Off

By Michael Frayn

Directed by Neil McDonald

Rep. House 16th - 19th September 2026

90th Anniversary Production

Synopsis

Noises Off is farce by Michael Frayn that humorously depicts the behind-the-scenes chaos of a theatre production.

The play follows a group of actors as they prepare for a performance of the fictional play Nothing On. The story begins with a chaotic dress rehearsal where the director, Lloyd Dallas, struggles to manage the cast’s egos, memory lapses, and romantical entanglements. As the play progresses, the audience witnesses a series of comedic mishaps, misunderstandings, and relationships that spiral hilariously out of control, both onstage and backstage. Ultimately, Noises Off is a celebration of the absurdities of theatre and the challenges faced by those who work in it.

Repertory Invercargill last staged Noises Off in 1992 at the State Insurance Theatre (SIT Centerstage) and was directed by the legend and Patron of Rep. himself, Mr. Jonathan Tucker. His production remains one of Repertory’s most successful and memorable productions a fitting addition to our 90th Anniversary celebrations.
